Two of my favorite creators (and why you should follow them too)
To be a great storyteller, copy what already works but MAKE IT YOUR OWN
Nathaniel Drew
Like me, Nathaniel Drew is an American with immigrant parents who left the United States to in a French-speaking country, France 🇫🇷
One misconception about people who are on camera for a living is that we are extroverted, meaning we get energy from social interaction
The reality is that content creators spend 90% of their time behind a computer editing, sending invoices, reaching out to brands, writing scripts, and that list goes on
I watched his “What People Don’t Understand About Introverts” in a moment of my life where I was confused why I had trouble socializing in group settings and just wanted to go home and go to bed
I hope to make videos that help people in a way that Nathaniel Drew has helped me
And if you haven’t noticed, I try to replicate his introspective cinematography in my own content, and we even use the same camera :)
Kelly Wakasa
I find the biggest “goofballs” usually have something they’re hiding; a much more introspective, serious, and emotional side
Kelly is by far my biggest inspiration when it comes to my editing style, and in fact, if you’re reading this, send me a DM on Instagram and tell me if you’ve noticed it too
The sound effects, pausing or changing the music to emphasize an important point, the transitions, I’ve been studying Kelly’s videos for the last 5 years and have been using his techniques in my own content, and I’ve improved as a storyteller as a result
His “i didn’t get into one college” helped me understand that the “go to college and immediately get a 9-5 you hate” path wasn’t necessarily for me (I did go to university but as you can see, I didn’t get a job)
So even though in his videos he’s a jokester, this video shows a different side of his personality that drives his creativity
Copy the Greats, but with a TWIST
If you’ve ever read any non-fiction book, ever, you’ll notice that the end has a massive list of HUNDREDS of sources that the author got their information from; they take information that already exists and make it their own story
If you’ve ever written a paper in school, your teacher asks you to write your sources at the end in the bibliography. You’re taking information that already exists and TELLING YOUR OWN STORY
Making videos is the same. Take what already exists, and make it your own
