12 lessons from 12 weeks of making videos

I've been a full-time content creator for 3 months, or 12 weeks - here are 12 lessons

1) Making videos is just FUN

These have been the best 12 weeks of my life. I’m becoming who I want to be. This is what I’ve always wanted; to get paid to make videos. This is all I think about. I’m obsessed. And I f*cking love it

2) Going Viral is bullsh*t

It’s a game. It’s like basketball. Teams miss a lot. But they also score a lot. As long as you keep shooting, keep trying new things, SOMETHING is going to work eventually. You just have to keep shooting. Just make what you wanna make, be yourself, and it will land eventually

3) If you chase followers, you will LOSE

Some would say 2,000 followers in 3 months is a lot; some would say it’s nothing

If you think having more followers will get you into clubs, events, parties, brand deals, etc… well it’s not that easy

The world keeps spinning, whether you are there or not. For the first month of posting I had about 100 followers, and I’d go days before seeing growth on my account

I didn’t give up, it paid off eventually. But if you’re not willing to be patient, you will lose

4) To make your videos unique, remember that YOU are unique

You have ideas to share, things to say, stories to tell. They’re COOL because they are YOURS

5) Your videos need to serve a GOAL, or else you will quit

Do you just want followers? Do you wanna change the world? Or in my case, do you wanna make videos for the 15 year old version of you? You need a WHY

6) PLANNING and YAPPING about making videos… is not making videos

Stop talking about it. Just do it. Planning isn’t the same thing. Shut up and film, edit, and post

7) Your videos have impact… even if you don’t realize it

I can’t walk into any startup-related event in Montreal without someone recognizing me, and it’s awesome. When you’re sitting behind a screen all day, you forget that what you post has impact. There are people who care about you, and I’m thankful

8) Don’t let having followers get to your head

To the same token, treat people nicely… maybe they can help you in some way or another. You don’t want people telling you you’ve changed for the worse

9) You will discover who your friends are when you start posting

I’m thankful I have friends who are supportive. The ones who aren’t are no longer friends and I haven’t seen them in months, years even. That’s okay

10) People will start talking… positively or negatively

Just like in life, not everyone is going to like you. Surround yourself with the positive energy of people who support you, and cut off anyone who doesn’t back you 100% of the way

11) The benefits of making videos are infinite

Gigs, brand deals, new clients for my agency, and most importantly, new friends, have all come from me deciding on December 21, 2024 to start posting daily videos

12) These have been the best 12 weeks of my life because I finally have DIRECTION

I was studying Honours Economics and Finance at McGill, and I hated it. I was miserable, depressed, anxious, and had an alcohol issue when I was 20

I now have direction. Thanks to all 2000 of you :)

Here’s a video I really enjoyed; once you go down a path that fulfills you, your doubts and negative thoughts begin to fade away. They don’t fully disappear, ever, but it gets better with time ❤️
